Oh dear. I keep spaghetti sauce in the fridge up to a week, shrooms,

So do I. Tomato sauce is an unfriendly environment for bacteria, anyway.

But I keep a lot of other things for longer than a few days. Once it
gets to be more than a week old, then I check it carefully before eating
it. At some point, it just gets dumped. I'm actually quite lazy about
cleaning my fridge, and every so often I have to dump out unrecognizable
items, container and all.

I usually draw the line at four days. But they I have a short memory and a
weak stomach so that's in the interest of safety. More than four days and
I'm not sure of origin date.

And Charlie will eat anything that is in the refrigerator, so I have to be
kind of careful about long term residents.

Both my daughters have been told if I die first to clean out the
refrigerator for him once in a while.

Then again, he seems to be able to eat darn near anything without problems.
He has eaten in street markets all over the world during his time in the
military.

Thoughts? Do I need to toss all that sauce?

Under REFRIGERATION???? (And COOKED?) Unless there's something radically
wrong with your refrigerator, cooked foods are good for at least a week or
two in the 'fridge. ....Heck, I've kept RAW mushrooms that long! (They get
a bit too discouraged looking to use in salad by then, but they're
perfectly fine if you cook them.) People living in temperate climates
used to keep cooked food for several days in their "larders" WITHOUT
refrigeration. Nowadays everyone seems to think even things like honey and
olive oil (which kept for hundreds of years in Egyptian tombs) not only
require refrigeration, but will spoil within a few days, even so. Get
REAL, people!

Eggs were a lot easier to cook when they were kept in a basket of the
counter. Even now, if I'm up early and know I'll be cooking eggs later in
the morning for everyone else, I'll sit the eggs and the bacon out to get to
room temperature.

I've kept cooked mushrooms for at least a week in the 'fridge with no
adverse reactions. Most cooked foods will last at least that long as long as
they are kept in tight containers.
Raw mushrooms don't look or smell too good after a few days in the 'fridge
though.

Fresh mushrooms will keep a lot longer if you don't store them in a tightly
sealed bag. And always buy ones where the gills aren't showing yet. They
will keep longer.

FOR EVERYONE FYI
If people like to keep food for a while or keep their food fresh they best
thing to invest into is a vacuum machine as seen on TV they are cheap and
come in handy for any amateur chef. I use mine to marinate food quickly
under an hour instead of overnight. They run about $100.00 and are the bet
investment you will make plus they come in handy during disasters you
can vacuum pack any document or item with the machine

Dunno, It's up to you. I don't keep these meals-type-of thingies in my
fridge for more than 3-4 days. Cheese is fine for ages.
I tend to freeze meals/sauce leftovers.
I think you need to toss it, Monique, there is no way I would eat a meal
that had been in my fridge for a week. It would go to the chickens. 3 days
is max for me.
I had an awful experience with a two day old prawn which I would not like to
repeat. Ever.

I learned my lesson also growing up. MY MOTHER was the type to keep food
for weeks after expiration date. Here words were always oh it is still good
even though the date was months out.
I got food poisoning so many times growing up and eating at her house that
it got to the point when we ate there I demanded to see the box or cans that
she cooked and if they were out of date more than a couple days. Which some
foods are still good after the dates for a certain period of time I know
that. I used to take whole prepared meals and dump them in the garbage in
front of all her guest to there amazement till I told them they were about
to eat food prepared from cans that were out of date on this date.
I love my mother to death who is actually still alive and kicking she
lives with me and DW. She has her own apartment that was built special to
the house. I still go into her food areas and find out of date products
which I throw away she still will go into the garbage and gets them out.(
Must be from when the depression happened or us being poor Kentucky
hillbilly when she grew up). I tried to solve the problem by taking her and
my daughter who does the same thing sat them down and took a hammer to the
food and told them both I would commit them both if they did not stop. They
still do it ( they know better according to them ) and I still take a hammer
to the food and throw it away. Any food that sits for more than 5 days in
the fridge unless it is vacuum sealed and frozen gets dumped and trashed in
MY house. They don't like it eat it I tell them.
I truly got sick and tired of having Montezuma's revenge on a monthly
basis. I have a strong system but the porcelain god is not one I like to
worship any more specially since I don't drink any type of alcohol anymore

Another thing that will keep longer if you don't keep it tightly sealed is
lettuce. I buy the prepared salads that come in bags. If I seal the bag,
it gets slimy in two or three days. If I leave the bag open, it will keep
for as much as a week.

Those bagged salads seem to last forever -- like multiple weeks -- for
me. Maybe the arid climate?

After reading all the posts, I've decided I'm worried enough about
whether it's good that if I ate it, I'd probably get psychosomatic
stomach pains, even if it's fine.

Out it goes.
