Default Cat suffers gun shot wounds

A cat was found in a Hastings neighborhood after it had been shot in
the back. The cat had to be put to sleep. Hastings police are
investigating a case of cat abuse. The animal's injuries were so
severe it had to be put to sleep.

Unlike last year when a cat was found duct-taped to a pole, this
animal had gunshot wounds. The cat was found Thursday afternoon after
the Hastings Police Department received a call about an injured
animal. It was not until Saturday when officials realized how severe
those injuries were.

When police officers first found the cat on the 400 block of South
California, they said it did not appear it was hurt that bad. When a
veterinarian examined the animal Saturday, she discovered the cat had
been shot in the back and needed to be put to sleep.

Although the Hastings Police Department does not know who the cat's
owner is, they said that will not stop them from trying to find out
who did this.

"What we are going to be doing is conducting a door-to-door situation
down there trying to knock on every door and make contact within
probably a block radius of where the animal was found to see if it is
their animal or if they had seen the animal," said Captain Stephen
Murphy of the Hastings Police Department.

The last case of animal abuse in Hastings was in December when a cat
was found duct-taped to a stop sign. Police said this case is going
to take time to investigate since authorities know so little about
whom the animal belongs to or where it has been.
