It's a fenced brick patio. Was there dog food out there? I can't think of any other reason for bears to be there. Jill The news report did not give any reason for the bears to be there. I grew up in a rural area of northeast Ohio. Years ago, I was using the phone and looking out of the window. Suddenly, I saw a bear ambling by the window. I was *more* than startled. At that time, bears were not known to inhabit Ohio. I called the local police station because the only think of was that it might be an escapee from a a wildlife sanctuary. Well, everyone insisted that I was mistaken. People kept saying that it was probably a large dog. Nope. I definitely know the difference between a bear and a dog. A few days later, people became believers when the bear appeared on a nearby golf course. Authorities began a search and wanted to use a tranquilizer gun so they could transport the bear to Pennsylvania, where bears were common. That was an extremely cold winter, and best guesswork was that the bear walked across the Ohio River during a period when the river actually froze. The frightening thing was that we later discovered evidence that the bear had been hibernating in a storage shed on our property--right behind a large pile of wood that we had been moving wood from the wood pile to use for our fireplace. In the years since that time, bears have returned to Ohio, and it is no longer rare to see them. MaryL |

But they DID mention that the dog's owner said that neighbors fed the bears. |

It's very foolish (indeed, stupid and dangerous) for the neighbors to feed the bears--dangerous for other people in the area and dangerous for the bears because they are often destroyed when they get too close to people. Small dog chases bears away from home
"MaryL" wrote in message ... Have you seen this? It's amazing. http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/feisty...om-calif-home/ MaryL I tried to view it but my computer said no. I need a new one, tbh as I'm still running on XP..which is increasingly saying no to Java updates and won't let let me read Facebook now. But I can imagine it. I had a friend who had a french bulldog and they can be feisty if roused. Luckily, we do not have bears here in the UK (phew) I only ever had one dog that I know for certain would have protected me from a bear. That was Rebel, my German Shepherd. He was an ex-police dog, retired from the force in disgrace through doing a lot of damage to a criminal he was chasing who kicked him in the stomach. Once he decided he liked me (he wasn't good with women) he would have protected me with his life. I used to take him for his last walk very late at night. Midnight or later. If he saw someone coming towards me (unusual) he would place his body in front of me, drop his head, and raise his tail. That was enough to make them cross the road away from me. I think he would have tackled a bear: he was fearless and had quite a bad temper. I only had one whippet that might have had a go. Susan. One day I answered the door and the police came bursting in. Wrong address.. Susan grabbed hold of the trouser leg of the first policeman through the door. And he had the cheek to say "did your dog just bite me? because if it did you are in serious trouble and so is your dog" I bundled Susan away into the kitchen and said to the policeman "no she has not bitten you. Yet. Let me see your leg, roll up your trouser leg and show me bite marks" He declined to do so. Because there weren't any. Susan was annoyed because she meant to get hold of his leg and missed. What else was she expected to do if a man bursts into her home except bite him? It was all a mistake apparently. Right house number, wrong street. Never got an apology. She *might* have had a go at a bear. All my other whippets would have said "I don't think so" It would have been their preferred option that I dealt with the bear and policemen myself;-) Tweed |
