Default Dead baby possum in the road

I was pulling out of the driveway when I saw a dead baby possum in the
road near my house. I was running late so just kept going but since it
was there when I got home I got some paper towels and up it in a
garbage bag. I think I even fed this one, but maybe it was another
one. Kind of hard to tell.

I felt awful about it though. Maybe if I hadn't let it eat the cat
food it wouldn't have hung out near the road. I really like possums
and they have a tough life. They aren't fast enough to get out of the
way of a car.

Since this was on Sunday and garbage pickup was Tuesday, it was really
stinking up the garbage can but it's gone now. I would have liked to
bury it but I don't think that's legal and my cats would probably try
to dig it up.

Oh well, I know everything dies but I prefer not to know about it on a
one-to-one level.

It's always sad to see a road casualty but don't blame yourself - maybe it
would have lived if you hadn't fed it?

If there was no chance of anyone seeing you, I would have buried it. Your
cats would not try to dig it up if you buried it deep enough, and why would
they, anyway?
There was some idea a while ago that it was not legal to bury our deceased
pets in our gardens. We had to inform some government department about it
apparently so we had to pay for their disposal. They even tried to get the
vets in on it.
It didn't work as everyone ignored it and I doubt the government are going
to search our gardens for the graves of our beloveds.

I did so much want KFC to be buried here under a tree in the garden she
loved but unfortunately that was not possible.
She was cremated along with the strays that that vet gets some money from,
the RSPCA.
I have not, and will never forget this.
I didn't get a chance to bring her back home. I was in hospital FGS.
I knew she didn't have much longer but I would have preferred to make the
decision for myself.
By the time I found out, my lovely fiesty girl had got the final needle.
She went missing looking for me, having not emerged from the house for two
years. She was 25 years old! and I know that as I now know where she came
from.

I suppose I could have buried it but my elbow just wasn't up to the
job of digging a deep hole. Besides, it wouldn't have helped the
possum who was beyond caring. I think I just want to be cremated and
not use up valuable land.

Valuable land! and here I was thinking you cared.

I think he was referring to his own burial, ie, to human cemetaries.
They do take up a lot of space. On the other hand, they are usually very
pleasant places to hang out in.

That's exactly what he was talking about. I do like hanging out in
cemeteries

We have a lot of them near me, which is why I think be cremated might
be a better option. Maybe we can double-deck them.

The possum wouldn't have taken up much space but I haven't even buried
my RB cats in the yard. In fact I only kept the ashes of one of them.
Nico still watches me from the china cabinet...

Oh good! We're not the only ones.

DH and I do like to wander about in cemeteries, the older the
better. Fascinating places...

The cemetaries on the West Coast don't compare with some of the older ones
in Massachusetts, where I grew up. Some of those are 4 centuries old. (I can
hear the Europeans snickering now. But Canadians and Aussies know what I
mean! Four centuries is old, right?)

I'll never forget asking my mom to don a pair of boots and go traipsing
around an old cemetery back in TN. I think I was about 20 It was
old, overgrown, unkempt. Obviously no caretaker. If there was ever a
church it was long gone. The headstones dated back to the early 1800's,
the latest we could find was from around 1950. I was fascinated by the
inscriptions.

There's a *very* old cemetery here on the island where I live. This
place was originally an indigo and cotton plantation. The ruins of the
mansion, outbuildings (and yes, slave quarters) along with the cemetery
are maintained by a preservation society. Dates back to the 18th century.
