Persia Update Saturday 3/27/10 AM

Persia is still doing well with the transdermal version of the Tapizole. No
red ears or itchiness. She's eating well. I haven't free-fed her in years
because for a long time she was overweight at 16 lbs. She's chowing down
and not getting sick to her stomach. But I'm afraid she might still be
losing weight. I spoke with the vet yesterday and she wants me to up the
dose of Tapazole. 5 ml in the morning and 2.5 in the evening. (It had been
2.5 and 2.5.) The handy-dandy applicator lets me do that easily enough.

So I'm still keeping a close eye on her. The radioactive isotope therapy is
still very much a possibility. (I still shudder at the expense and all the
stuff I'll have to do for the two weeks after the treatment. To say nothing
of having her locked up 125 miles away for a week! But I'll do what I have
to do.) The vet agrees we should keep trying this treatment for a few weeks
and monitor her very closely.

Meanwhile, her new Kitty Walk has arrived. Almost simultaneously, my friend
picked up and put together my new patio furniture! The weather has been
just beautiful down here on the barrier islands of coastal South Carolina.
Temps averaging about 70F, sunny and bright. (Of course, I've been at
work.) If it's that nice again this afternoon she and I will be sitting
outside together on the patio. Me with a book, she with the birds and
squirrels for entertainment.

Here I've got a bunch of those crane flies, they look like giant
mosquitoes and are commonly called skeeter eaters

a few nights ago i hear a low meow and i turned and found it came from
IMP, my silent kitty, and he was staring quite intensly up at the
ceiling. I found that one of those flies had gotten inside and Imp
was determined to try to hunt it. No jumps, but it was a definite
change of behavior, since i rarely see him play or stalk something I
know he does play, and gets caught up in it. When I do catch him at
it he looks at me with wide eyes, then stops and skulks away with a
'you did NOT see me doing ANYTHING...' He is the resident bug hunter
around here.

I'm glad to hear that Persia is tolerating the transdermal Tapezole.

Keep in mind it takes a FULL MONTH for the effects of the Tapezole to
stabilize Persia's thyroid function, and to be reflected in her lab
test(s).

That includes a change in the dosage, too.

So I would advise, unless Persia shows signs of illness, hold off taking
her in to see TED, and have those stressful (and expensive!) lab tests
done, until about a month from now.

That is what my TED told me, when Kenzie was so sick from the Tapezole,
and I had to take her off the Tapezole, and had to very gradually
increase the dose of Tapezole over a period of about 3 weeks. She said
there was no point in bringing Kenzie in again until she had been on her
'full dose' for about a month.

Sending purrs for Persia to tolerate, and stabilize, on the Tapezole.

stabilize Persia's thyroid function, and to be reflected in her lab
test(s).

immediately say "bring her in" when I expressed some concern about the
weight. (I can't say for sure she's lost any more weight, though.)

first, purrs for Persia to tolerate the medication and continue to
improve.
When we first started getting concerned about a cat's weight, we
bought a digital baby scale. The prices run from $45-60, and higher.
The one we've been using is:

The scale has been invaluable for tracking weight changes. I know
money is tight for you, but the scale can provide peace of mind (if
Persia's weight is good) or let you know when the it's time to call the
vet.

Our vet has no problem with us stopping in the use the scale
ourselves to keep track of the dog and cat weight. I usually take
them in every four to six months just to make sure they don't get
too heavy. Its so hard to just eyeball their weight with the coat
changes by season.
