complications in cat pregnancy
My daughter brought home a stray and very quickly it became obvious that
she had brought home more than one. Momma kitty is now showing. I have had her for about a month and have no idea when she is due. about a week ago she started laying around either at my feet (wherever i happen to be) or in my closet. Have never had kittens but my dog did the same thing so i think thats normal. I will try not to be too gross with this next part but I really need help as I have never had a cat before. About three days ago she started "leaking" but there was no blood. I looked it up and found her symptoms to be close to the 1st stage of labor. It said it could last up to a day and a half that a vet is not needed for any stage of labor just give her a quiet spot and she will do the rest, sounds easy. Today being the third day she has started to have some blood mixed in but still no sign of kittens. No heavy breathing, pushing, sweating, screaming or throwing things. Oh wait, that was me, but you get the point. Is this normal? Should I just leave her be or get her to a vet? Would rather avoid vet expense just so they could laugh at me and tell me that millions of cats have kittens every day and then charge me $100.00. -- Message posted via http://www.catkb.com |

"kaeli" wrote in message Cats just aren't really all that vocal about their pain. When our old Tom (RIP, dude, we still miss ya) got his tail crushed in the door, no one knew until the tip fell off 3 days later. Seriously. Long hair hid the wound (and it wasn't all that bloody, but the bones were crushed) and he never acted like there was a problem. Talk about feeling guilty... I found it odd that my Gnarly purred the whole time she gave birth. |

In article 1110482042.818be067245534ab7e7b68d570aae254@teran ews,
enlightened us with... I found it odd that my Gnarly purred the whole time she gave birth. Many cats purr when they are in pain. The general consensus seems to be that it is a way of comforting themselves. My troublemaker, Rowan, purrs when I yell at her to stop doing whatever she's doing (getting into things, pulling towels off the racks, trying to eat my plants, or whatnot). She knows it makes me melt. Only cat I've ever had that runs TO me when I yell and clap my hands. Little bugger. She's got MY number. *heh* -- -- ~kaeli~ Is it possible to be totally partial? http://www.ipwebdesign.net/wildAtHeart http://www.ipwebdesign.net/kaelisSpace |

OK, I called a vet that is a breeding specialist and she said that it is
fairly normal. She seems to be a young cat (under a year old) and this is probably her first litter. It is not uncommon for this part to last a few days. Where the danger comes is if she gets to the point of straining. That should not last for days, although it is common to have part or most of the litter then stop labor and have another kitten or two a day later. She has decided to have them in my bathtub which could be a problem but could be worse, at least this way there is not carpet. I thought that the fact that she was just laying there puring meant that labor was not progressing but the vet said that is normal and is kind like lamaz for cats. Who knew she would be so calm about the whole thing? all in all the vet said to keep an eye on her and call back in the morning to let her know how she is and she will evaluate at that time if she needs to be seen but she is pretty sure that by the time i call back it will be to tell her how many new kitties I have to find homes for. She did say that it is quite rare for cats to have to have c sections and that it is mostly with cats that have come from breeding programs and alley cats, as this one seems to be, are pretty tough and get through it well enough on their own. I do thank everyone for their help and hope that all goes well. I will post in the morning to let all know. -- Message posted via http://www.catkb.com |
