Default (OT) Healing a split lip?

A week ago I was moving a big table, holding the top of it in front of me
with the legs pointing forward, and I rammed a table leg into a doorway. The
table top struck me in the mouth, nearly broke some teeth and split open my
lip, which is now very swollen and sore. I've been putting salve on it but
it doesn't seem to help. Here it is a week later and it's still agonizingly
painful. What can I do to make it heal faster?

If it keeps splitting itself open again you might need a stitch in it
to hold it together... my sympathies!

I split my lip years ago after falling onto a step. I don't think it
took a week or more to start healing though. The first few days were
bad, I had to drink through a straw. I'd be worried about infection at
this point for yours if it's worse now than it was. I'd suggest seeing
a doctor. At the very least, short periods of icing it may help numb
it for temporary relief.

This morning, for the first time, the split is "closing". It still hurts a
lot but it seems the worst is over. This is the first time I've had this
kind of injury (never been in a fist fight). It ain't fun!

Aloe vera gel, tea tree oil, vitamin E ointment, time. (And
avoid talking, smiling, etc. - anything that requires lip
movement.)

1. I am not a doctor. I suggest you seek professional help.

2. But, if you can't (or won't), try salt water rinses. 1/4 teaspoon in
each tumbler (half-pint) of water. It WILL sting, but if it's already
painful, it can't be any worse!

3. You may also like to try application of an antiseptic toothpaste.
Don't pick one with bicarb (like Arm & Hammer) - that will definitely hurt!

Really? Application of pure bicarbonate of soda used to be
the standard remedy for "canker sores"! (Yeah, it hurt, but
it also healed them up quickly.)

Yikes! Sorry about your lip. I split mine open on the steering wheel
in an accident years ago. Don't remember too meny problems with it
healing, except that it was a slow process. Still have a mark from
it. Some people swear by that Carmax ointment (with the yellow lid),
but I've used Blistex all my life. I like the way it instantly cools
and kinda numbs my lips when they are in bad shape. Hope yours starts
healing faster.
