BIG SNOW COMING
Thus far not a problem it started in London just before 8.30 yesterday morning then snowed all day but the trains were okay on the whole...some of the further out overground trains had delays but the bulk of the underground ran okay and was even empty as people left work early "just in case" or didn't get in if they were further out. This morning it was thawing although there has since been some more snow but it doesn't appear to be settling. Obviously I am being very careful walking around as it's slippery outside. The main thing right now is how cold it is-we have the heating on and are wearing warm clothes and still it's cold. This may be because the bulk of the heating is being absorbed by 2 heat sponges as the cats are refusing to move more than a foot away from a radiator unless they have to

As i broke my leg just loading my woodburner inside the house I am not inclined to chance ice and snow. My brother could not come and do it as he only lives a mile and half away. Too busy. Sometimes I could slap him and remind him when I changed his nappies and taught him to read. before he went to school. |

I got myself a new calor gas bottle for the little heater I have in case my wood runs out. We will be Ok. It's a bit nippy here. Boyfie has discovered that I put the fire on in the kitchen when it gets -5 or more. It's horribly cold here. We are expecting a foot of snow overnight, but we are prepared ;-) How lucky I am not to have to go to work..as they would 've deducted my pay if I did not chance it. Now I just plough my way down the garden to feed the chickens. Boyfie always wants to skip his breakfast to "help" feed the chickens. After that, he is very hungry. How nice to help your meowmie with chores and then both get your breakfasts afterwards, like a reward. We've had the snow here this morning. There was a light covering over night but when we left home at 6.40am the main roads had been gritted and were clear. The snow started at 8am and it soon got heavy and the roads began to get very slippery. DH's school closed at 10.30am and as I'd already warned my boss yesterday that if I was in work and got worried about getting home I would be leaving, I asked for the afternoon as leave. As I'd already done 4 hours by then I was able to take the half day and left at 11am. When I got home I rang into work to let them know that lorries were getting stuck on hills (everywhere is hills around here) they said that it had been declared as inclement and staff could all leave at 12 o'clock and all buildings would be shut at 2pm. They closed everything Libraries, leisure centres, all Local Authority building except the day care centres. We went across the road to the pub for a meal tonight and were not surprised to see several of our neighbours. The main road by our house seems ok but I've just heard on the news that they've cancelled all buses in the area from 7pm due to icy conditions on top of the snow and slush. We've had about 5 inches so far. All side roads are bad. I'm sure that people in other countries will ask what the problem is, only 5 inches but we're not really well kitted out for this weather as we don't have that much of it. But we have had big snow for the last few years and we do nothing about it. We pretend we never saw it before and it's all a big shock. Everything grinds to a halt. Germany gets massive snow, they seem to manage. It's the law that they get their tyres changed and they have posts at the side of the road so you know what side you are on. Rural. Not sure abt German cities. |

BIG SNOW COMING
It's been coming down very heavily in London since sometime this morning (I woke up at 7 and saw it was coming down I was very happy to snuggle back down under the duvet!). I made one trip to the local shops and got everything I could possibly need, came through the front door looking like a snow woman and am now not leaving the house until tomorrow morning when I hope the trains will be okay but doubt they will

What is debatable is the arrogance of Man in deciding that it's our activities that are causing climate change. I also studied geology. The geological record, if the theories are to be believed, shows climate change over many millenia (and I use that to mean *tens of millions* of years, not thousands). The theories say that there were no species of man around when many of the changes previously occurred. Modern climate change and geology are just theories. We can't actually prove any of it. Good points! However, I do believe we don't need to be cutting down tons of forests and destroying ecosystems just because we can. I don't have a solution, nor do I wish to start any sort of polical debate. That happens, I'll kill the thread. I'm just saying there are some things we can and should do more responsibly. Perhaps if we had a lot of massive snow the authorities wouldn't be able to ignore it with a wait and see what happens attitude and then try to sort it. All the main roads around here had been gritted and were clear Friday morning when we went to work, the side roads weren't. Then the snow came again. Yesterday morning we were amazed when the gritting lorry (with a snow plough on the front) came and gritted our little cul-de-sac. I've lived here since 1975 and never seen that before. They did all the side roads Wow! I feel that my local council is at least trying. (I could be proved wrong of course.) They have built new storage facilities for grit which enables them to have a much bigger stock and they did take advantage of that before the bad weather hit. Of course I might not feel like this later in the week. I can never get out from my house if we have significant snow followed by icy temperatures. My council still only grits bus routes. You are lucky that your council did that. I have so much snow that I am afraid to go outside to my wood store in case I slip and break yet another bone. Now you might think that my neighbours might clear a path for me to my wood store, it's in the front garden so it wouldn't take them more than 5 minutes. Nope. I saw an interview on the tv with a manager of one council gritting teams who said that they had had a phone call from a lady who had a family funeral happening on Friday. They cleared all roads that were needed as he said the family had enough to cope with. I know that there are a lot of such instances where workers put themselves out to help. On the day of Dad's funeral they decided to start resurfacing the main road near my house. As we had the funeral reception booked at the pub on that road this was not good as the traffic was down to contra-flow and queued back for a mile. I went to talk to the men to find out what was happening and explained and he said that they were due to finish at 2.30 so even though quite often they hit a delay, would make sure they did so that the traffic would be sorted by the time we needed it. He said that they always made sure funeral processions were not stopped and flagged them through. When we went out to the funeral all the traffic had cleared. Boyfie kept asking to go out but turned back every time when he saw inches of snow. He eventually pooed in the bath. Yes, he has a litterbox in the bathroom, but no, he will not use it. I would not like to dip my nether regions into the snow either and he can't find anywhere not frozen to dig. He is excused. He didn't come upstairs today to greet me when I woke up. I guess he is aware of his poo in the bath. and was worried. He's only done it 3 times in emergencies and I would never draw his attention to it. He is very clean cat in the house. ery clean cat |
