I remember a guy who used to post here several years ago, who lost a
cat to a brown recluse. In fact, I thought he lost more than one cat,
which prompted him to have someone come to the house to investigate,
and they found an infestation of them. His family had to move out and
go stay somewhere else while the place was fumigated. It was really
sad. Anyone remember that?

To scoop any bug, I use a piece of thin cardboard (like the ones at
the
back of paper notepads) and a wide jar or a big clear glass. I put
the
jar/glass over the bug and slide the cardboard underneath without
hurting
their legs. Then the bug isn't able to run away and off it goes
outside.

Seems I can't do the right thing no matter what. First I killed a
spider
with bug spray and everyone bitched about it. Last night I tried to
scoop
one up to put it outside and it ran faster than a cat and got away
into a
nice clean basket of clothes. (This one also had babies swarming off
her.)
I love nature as much as anyone. But I'm not going to live in a house
infested with spiders. Sorry, Bobble. The bugs gotta go.

Speaking as one who likes spiders (they eat ants and roaches)

Spiders don't eat Palmetto bugs. They don't call this the Palmetto
State
for nothing Think it's about trees? Nope, it's about bugs. LOL

*is* a limit FGS. I am not scared
of them....and you obviously are, no sweat, no diss.

I'm not scared of spiders, I just don't want them and their babies in
my
house. And it happened really quickly.

Needless to advise: lock Persia up in another part of house till fog
settles down and also consult and
read directions as to safety of product for household pets!
Anyone who deplores my suggestions can **** *** **** **, LOL.

Hop, I already consulted with Terminex and the stuff they use is not
harmful
to cats or dogs. I won't have to vacate my home or lock Persia in the
bathroom. I also won't have to stay a motel room, which I thought I
might
have to. Nope!

Jill

Great. I have a feeling you will be rid of more than spiders, like,
all freeloading summer
bugs.
I had no idea SC is Palmetto State. That's ROFL funny. FL is the
Sunshine State but palmetto
bugs are abundant the they hang out by urban street lights but also
invade homes inside
your bag of groceries, etc. They fly high and go for your hair. They
don't live in MileHigh. I
have seen 5-inchers in Miami.

*Why* is it that whenever you scare them, like my turning the light on in
the garage, they run *towards* you instead of away? *that's* what creeps
me out about roaches, especially cockroaches as big as my hand... that
*FLY*!

Yikes! I'm glad we don't have those here!

Aussie roaches are as big as dates, and fly. Hate them, but they're
fact of life around here.

Since our spiders are potentially fatal, and if not fatal then can cause
necrosis, then unless I can be positively sure its not going to harm me
or mine, if its in the house, its dead. I wold love to be able to scoop
them up and shoo them out, but fear makes me react irrationally. That
and I don't have glass big enough for the huntsman spiders.

I was fortunate enough not to see any of those roaches on any of my five
trips to Australia. I did see some good-sized spiders, though. I know
about redbacks, but don't have any idea what a huntsman looks like.

On my first trip to Oz, a woman took me for a walk somewhere along the water
sort of near Sydney - well, near enough that the walk ended at a ferry dock.
Anyway, there were a lot of trees near the trail, and several of the trees
were full of giant webs filled with large black spiders. Fortunately, they
were far enough from the train there wasn't much danger of one dropping on
me, or I don't think I could have completed that walk.

Well, the size was a bit of an exaggeration, I've been known to do that
now and again ;, but they *are* very, very big for an insect.
Realistically, they can get to be about 4 or 5 inches long and about 2 -
3 inches wide. I'm sure they're totally harmless (aside from the germs
they carry), but they just creep me out to the point of making my skin
crawl and cause involuntary screams coming from my mouth (Ben has
learned to not come rushing down when he hears screams coming from the
garage unless they're followed by "BEN, HELP!!!!!".

I don't remember that. But it wouldn't surprise me. There are definitely
poisonous spiders in the US. Rare, but yes, we have them. I don't think
these are poisonous spiders but I still don't want them in my house. And
since it wouldn't let me pick it up on a piece of cardboard and take it
outside (as I so nicely offered to do) I called an exterminator. I'll be
prepared to vacuum up lots of bug corpses later.

I spray around the outside doors to the house regularly. But they're
working on the golf course and I think it's driving a lot of the outside
critters in. I had an infestation of teeny tiny ants in my bathroom not
long ago.

It is not necessary to kill them, they can be put outside if you are

I

I don't like spiders. At all, never.

There is really isn't any animal that creeps me out, except one. Of
course there are many, like tigers, that I wouldn't want to be in the
vicinity of without something between.

Roaches! They run *towards* you when you scare them, they're creepy and
they *crunch* when you step on them and can scamper away when they're
half
crunched!!! EEEEEE-YUKKKKKKKKKKKK!

Never seen one, but I think I could cope with one, rather than a huge
spider. I am afraid of no insects, moths, nothing except those big
spiders.
I have asked myself why, I still have no idea. It's not like they are
going

i just cannot. Bring on the roaches, I will swap them for big spiders,
every time.

Yes, I do remember that, but we don't have any spiders in the UK that are

True. I knew that, but sometimes, living in the US where there is *SO*
much danger all around, I can't imagine living in a place with no
ever-present dangers. Over here there's always stories about someone
being mauled by a bear, attacked and killed by a cougar, chomped on by
an alligator, swarmed by killer bees, bitten by a rattlesnake or water
moccasin, and on and on and on. Even when you stay indoors you can be
bitten by a bug and killed! Never mind hurricanes, tornadoes, earth
quakes and other "blessings" of mother nature that can kill *many*
people at a time. I don't know about weather-wise, but dangerous
creature wise Australia is almost as bad (and Africa, I think, worse
than that, but I don't think we have any posters here from Africa, do
we?).

If I ever moved to another country I think it would be England.

Guess what? Now my house is overrun with them! Apparently the one

thing and "set it outside" except it wasn't having any of that. It
wouldn't let me gently scoop it up on a piece of paper and put it
outside. Damn thing runs faster than my cat! No, it had to get
into
my laundry basket. Sorry folks, I'm calling a fumigator.

Last night I tried to
scoop
one up to put it outside and it ran faster than a cat and got away
into
a
nice clean basket of clothes. (This one also had babies swarming off
her.) I love nature as much as anyone. But I'm not going to live in
a
house infested with spiders. Sorry, Bobble. The bugs gotta go.

It is not necessary to kill them, they can be put outside if you are
brave
enough. I am not very brave with the big ones, they are the only
thing
I
don't like, but I manage to put them outside without killing them now.
Maybe they don't like it as they are "house spiders"
I don't like spiders. At all, never.

There is really isn't any animal that creeps me out, except one. Of
course there are many, like tigers, that I wouldn't want to be in the
vicinity of without something between.

Roaches! They run *towards* you when you scare them, they're creepy
and
they *crunch* when you step on them and can scamper away when they're
half
crunched!!! EEEEEE-YUKKKKKKKKKKKK!

Never seen one, but I think I could cope with one, rather than a huge
spider. I am afraid of no insects, moths, nothing except those big
spiders.
I have asked myself why, I still have no idea. It's not like they are
going
to kill me, is it?
i just cannot. Bring on the roaches, I will swap them for big spiders,
every time.

Well, no, some *can* kill you. Do you remember Pam's encounter with a
brown spider? It took half her thigh off.

--

Yes, I do remember that, but we don't have any spiders in the UK that are
dangerous or poisonous so there is no logical reason why they are such a
no-no for me.

Some people just have arachnophobia. My daughter is one.

The thing about phobias is that you can't talk someone out of them or reason
them away, because they aren't reasonable. They just are. I have a couple
of phobias myself, but they're relatively mild.

True. I knew that, but sometimes, living in the US where there is *SO*
much danger all around, I can't imagine living in a place with no
ever-present dangers. Over here there's always stories about someone
being mauled by a bear, attacked and killed by a cougar, chomped on by an
alligator, swarmed by killer bees, bitten by a rattlesnake or water
moccasin, and on and on and on. Even when you stay indoors you can be
bitten by a bug and killed! Never mind hurricanes, tornadoes, earth
quakes and other "blessings" of mother nature that can kill *many* people
at a time. I don't know about weather-wise, but dangerous creature wise
Australia is almost as bad (and Africa, I think, worse than that, but I
don't think we have any posters here from Africa, do we?).

If I ever moved to another country I think it would be England.

The most dangerous creatures in the US are the ones that drive on the
freeways. Still, most accidents happen in the home.

I think Australia has more dangerous creatures than we do, although most of
them are smaller than bears or cougars. For instance, they have nine out of
the ten most poisonous snakes in the world. I've visited Australia five
times, and spent a total of three or four months there, but, with one
exception, the only poisonous snakes I saw were in enclosures. I did see
one that had been run over on the road. They have some pretty nasty
critters in the ocean, too, but I never saw any of those. I take that back,
on my last trip I took a ride in a glass-bottomed boat, and we saw a
jellyfish.
