Oh how funny. An ex of mine had neighbors with cats and a large turtle. In
the backyard in the summertime, the cats would gather around the turtle and
stare at it quizzically, occasionally giving it a very cautious swat on the
shell. They were thoroughtly freaked out by it, but seemed unable to tear
themselves away.

I remember once seeing my parents' cat find a box turtle in the yard.
She was fascinated by it, but also seemed a bit scared. She would creep
forward, with her belly almost touching the ground, and be about to tap
the turtle with a paw. Then the turtle would hiss, and the cat would
leap backwards three feet or so. This repeated several times before the
cat finally became bored and went elsewhere.

I suspect her thoughts were along the line of "Well, it doesn't look much
like a snake, but it smells like a snake and makes snaky noises..."

Many years ago, when we had a miniature schnauzer, we "turtle-sat" for some
friends. It think it was a desert tortoise. It was about 15-18 inches
across. The dog was completely confused. Finally she stood on top of the
turtle's shell and barked.

Hehehe. That tortoise really had a fascination for cats. My sister used
to have a tortoise, but her cats ignored it and it (she) ignored the
cats. She was called Josefina.

I like how the cat tries to play with the turtle feline-style, with
the old clamp, scratch'n'bite routine. Then the cat gets confused when
the turtle doesn't respond in kind.
