I'm always amazed at the number of science fiction fans here. It seems
sci-fi and cat slavery go hand in hand!

That's because cats are aliens. Ask them. They have to tell the truth,
it's the law.

As I remember from what I've read, he was a vegetarian, an animal lover,
and (for the times) an environmentalist. But a lot of this was connected
to his fanatical, puritannical (in the colloquial sense) need to "purify"
society.

Now I have to look this up to confirm/correct my story...

Just did a Google search and read a few articles, book excerpts, etc.
Apparently this is a hotly debated topic. I saw more sites with claims
that he was vegetarian and an animal lover, than those claiming he was
not. But my sample was pretty small and hardly exhaustive, plus they
were all biased by their own agenda: meat-eaters say he was, and
vegetarians say he wasn't. Nobody wants to claim der fuhrer as their
own, after all.

I'm a meat-eater but I do admire vegetarianism. At the same time, even
the most essentially benevolent beliefs and practices can be used as
weapons of fanatical self-righteousness. People who are driven by the
need to cleanse and purify the world, for whatever reason, have the
potential to be very dangerous, IMO. Even when I'm sympathetic to their
goals, I'm very wary of such individuals. Doing the right things for
the wrong reasons and all that.

For example, too many "born again" Christians! (Like the niece who
stole a large portion of my retirement savings, by appropriating
$55,000 her mother had invested in a CD for me.) I know many of them
are deeply sincere in their beliefs, and all religions have their share
of hypocrites - it just seems that the extreme versions have more than
their share of people who merely pay lip-service (or perhaps they just
confuse their own whims with "God's will").

But of course everybody speaks English, even all the aliens on the
sci-fi shows speak English...

Good point, Christine! I did ask N if she would like me to learn
German as I felt embarrassed that she was obliged to speak English to
me all the time. (I only learnt French at school.) She said not, that
she would prefer to practise her English on me and besides she thought
I might be too old to learn it now!
LOL! phew

Tweed

How rude of her to call you old...

It's not exactly what she meant. She meant I should have learned German
as a child which would never have happened when I was at school as the
war was only twenty five years away and the idea of learning German, well
totally out of the question. We learnt French instead. It has only
been useful for me to read what is on packets of food. I know exactly
what is in them ;-)

Tweed

C'est très bien! I'm "rehashing" my rusty and limited French with my
latest flame (BF/DP), who's English is worse than my French... :/
(Not a Finn, so the local languages are not an option...)

Oh, you have a new boyfriend! Congratulations. What nationality is he?
(don't just say French! lots of nations speak French ;-) )
Brits are dire at other languages. We expect people all over the world to
learn it. I was quite good at translating French-English and reverse when
I was at school but was shy about speaking it. As an adult I realise it
does not really matter what your accent is like, just that you try, and
native speakers will be kind about it.
Learning French has not been particularly useful to me. German would have
been better as it turned out ;-)
I have the best German-English dictionary (called Duden) I was trying to
tell N how much I liked tapirs a while ago. I looked in Duden and couldn't
find tapir in it, so I tried to describe it to her. "It's like a big pig
with a little trunk on its nose"
She said "in German we call it a tapir..German isn't so difficult after all,
is it?"
That made me laugh. So sarcastically wonderfully funny.

Sorry for the delay. I tried to reply to you directly with a longer
message but it bounced. I guess I didn't fix the addy properly.
Anyway, my new boyfriend is Tunisian, even though he doesn't "look the
part", he's got blue eyes... It seems strange to hear him speak Arabic
with his friends...

Blue eyes look very striking with a dark skin. I have a friend whose father
was Pakistani and mother was white. She has quite a dark skin but her eyes
are amazingly blue.
I wish you happiness with him, but be aware (as I know you are) that his
idea of women's place in the world might not be the same as yours.

He's not very dark, but yes, darker than me. And oh yes, I'll set him
straight if he tries to put me in a place I don't want to be, I'm a cat
(usually rabbit, sometimes cat, I prefer cat...) in the Chinese
horoscope, after all... But he cooks, cleans, irons etc. so it
doesn't seem too bad, and his friend with whom he's staying here is
married to a Finnish woman, so I'm sure he's got some background info
already.

He cooks, cleans and irons! If he does gardening too, send him here.
Seriously, I wish you happiness with him. You deserve it.

I'll have to ask him about the gardening bit, but even if he does, you
can't have him!!
And thanks for the good wishes.
