So I understand correctly that she gathers from several newsgroups,
over each year? What a sad, selfless task!

Melissa's work has been a daily task for years. She's kept track of
the cats and other family members who've passed away over the years.
It's not been an easy task but has been a labor of love. Many of us
count on her, through thuh voice of Mietze, to keep track and post the
ceremony at the end of what's always a busy year for everyone. I
never remember the ball until it's almost here but always I check the
list carefully and try to pay proper respect. I personally don't want
anyone else taking over this task. I don't have faith that someone
else can do it as wonderfully as Melissa. Dolores

I don't know about others, but I wasn't aware that someone had flamed
her. That's awful! For what it's worth, everybody in my clowder would be
very glad to see Melissa keep doing the awesome job she has been doing.
Having to keep track of the passings, just from posts on RPCA and RPCC,
would be a huge task. Incorpoprating information from mailing lists as
well would make the job much larger. And for having done such an
tremendous job for such a long time, she is to be thanked and praised.

Melissa, I don't know who said what, but us here on the list really do
appreciate you and the job you do.

Just to clarify, no, the only newsgroup names have come from is this
one, the Ball belongs to *this* group. Mietze would be in violation
of their charters to post to any of the other sub-groups as herself,
but there have been instances where a human who primarily posts in,
say, *.anecdotes also sent a notice to r.p.c.c when their cat died.
Mietze added that cat if the last name was given in the post, asked
for it if it was not, and explained about the Ball and the Walk.
Maybe they'd be back and post at the Ball, maybe they wouldn't, but
they'd know about it, and they could go to the Walk page right away
and see the name alongside all the others because the page was updated
as soon as the full name was given.

The other source is a couple of mailing lists I'm on where the
participants and their cats met on r.p.c and/or r.p.c.c. Their names
have been added with terrible frequency these last few years, as the
originals and second or third wave kitties become geriatric elders.

And, every once in awhile, a private email arrives from someone I
haven't heard from in ages, saying that a kitty has passed and to
please include them.

In Sept., usually around 4 weeks out from the Ball, the Draft list
would be posted. It went early so corrections and additions wouldn't
be left to the last minute, and also to serve as a little reminder for
anyone who wanted to (or was able to...sometimes the grief is just too
fresh) write something would have time to do so.

I have several cats who have been Honorees, I know firsthand that
being included can be a genuinely healing event. The Ball may be a
work of fiction, but it's also *real*...these are real cats, real
people in the process of moving past grief. Being a little compulsive
(yeah, ok, being a *lot* compulsive), my goal was that no cat, or
friend-to-cats someone wanted to honor, would be overlooked.

All right. I've been carefully writing this in the past tense, but
the last month has been literally one big headache and I'd really like
to be able to toss the whole thing out with the used litter and move
on. I've been watching and haven't seen another cat volunteer or
accept nomination. If I missed it, PLEASE let me know, or if
somekitty wants it but hasn't spoken up, please do so as soon as
possible. Otherwise, Mietze's retirement is deferred, to be
reconsidered after the 2008 Ball (Bast willing that we're both on this
side of the Bridge next October).

My heartfelt thanks to everyone who's written such kind words. I
appreciate it more than I could ever say.

Melissa

HAY! Duz dis meeen I don't git mine gold dish? Or mine partee?

Mietze
