People often say that the San Francisco area has a "Mediterranean"
climate, which I guess fits with Athens. I always think of places like
Tuscany, or other areas of Italy where grapes are grown. Definitely
a major crop in this area, too.

One of the factors, which I alluded to in my original message, is having
a large body of water nearby, particularly if it is upwind. San
Francisco, Athens, and Tokyo all have ocean upwind of them; Nashville is
about 500 miles from the nearest ocean. As a result, Nashville has wider
annual temperature swings than do the other cities. The area around
Buffalo, New York, USA is another area with a water-buffered climate; in
that case, the water is in the Great Lakes, west of the region. That
area has heavy snowfall, due to moisture from the Lakes, but doesn't get
as cold in the winter as do corresponding latitudes west of the Lakes.
Upstate New York has a lot of vineyards, showing that the winter cold
isn't too extreme for the grape vines.

And I've read from people in Arizona where you would typically think low
humidity, is getting more humid from people used to having a lawn moving
there and installing irrigation systems. True, not sure, but makes sense.

It isn't so much their lawns as it is their beloved golf courses.
