I can haul my 120kg frame down to the train station (about a mile away) in
under 20 minutes and not be out of breath. Like to see a "slim" person do
the same thing.

Yowie

A few months ago I was shopping in Norwich. In the mall I needed to go up a
flight of stairs to the next level. I bounded up whizzing past a slim young
thing who was puffing her way up the stairs. She was with her boyfriend, who
looked a bit stunned when a middle-aged fat lady whizzed past them. I had a
smug moment to myself ;-)

They would never dream of saying "You're so fat you're going to blow up" to a
large person.

Oh but they do...

How inexcusably rude! I've been saying this for years - there is one form
of prejudice, intolerance and discrimination that it's still perfectly OK
for people to display - prejudice against large people (I won't even say
overweight because if you're fit and healthy then what you weigh may be just
right for your body type and you're not overweight at all!).

Well, I could be fiiter and undoubtedly healthier if I lost some weight. But
what gets my goat, is the pressure put on people to be not just trim, but ot be
positively skeletal. Thre are problems attached wiht being obese and there are
problems attached with being underweight. But it's apparently socially
acceptable to be *thin* but not to be fat. And that's part of what tees me off
;-)

They
tell me how good I look - well no, I don't look good, I'm 53 and just lost
100 pounds in the last 8 months and my skin is pooling around my ankles - I
look like a Sherpe! But thinner is *supposed* to look better even when in
reality it doesn't.

That is a very real problem when you lose a lot of weight, especially a lot of
weigh *quickly*. Are you considering the surgery to have excess skin removed?
I've seen it done and it looks, well, *serious stuff*.

I'd like to see what would happen if a television show made fun of a member
of an ethnic minority like they make fun of large people. I'd like to see
what would happen if employers discriminated against a member of an ethnic
minority like they discriminate against large people. It's horrible and it
has to stop because it's killing people. That right, killing people. Our
young women are literally starving themselves to death to try to look like
some model who is 5'10" and weighs 100 pounds. When did this "look" become
so sought-after. To me they look horrendous with their hip bones and ribs
sticking out.

You have made valid points, I think.

Cheers, helen s

Nope, never! As I said, I didn't have the surgery to look good, but to cure
my life-threatening medical conditions (seriously, my doctor said my life
was in danger if I didn't lose weight and my yo-yo dieting all my life only
exacerbated the problems). I'm a 53-year-old MaMere (grandmother) and I
don't figure I'll be strutting down a runway any time soon (at least not in
this lifetime!!), so I'm not about to put myself through the torture (and
surgical risk) of a tummy tuck so I can wear a bikini. ;

Hugs,

That was 120 KG (approximately 264 pounds) not 120 pounds...

Well, to be honest I probably could. I weigh around 125 lbs perhaps 130. I
don't understand why anyone discriminates again large people. One of my
best friends is so large, that no doctor's surgery can weigh her, she has to
go to the railway station to go on their machine. I haven't asked her what
she weighs - why would I? Probaby 30 stone 30 x 14lb. work that out. Why
does her weight matter? It's her choice.
She is lovely and has been a great help to me recently. Why does it matter
what size anyone is? As far as I'm concerned it's irrelevant. What matters
to me is not my friend's size, just how good a friend she/he is.

I am not slim. I am overweight. I am fat. The other week was the cycling
club
annual dinner & award ceremony, which I had to be at as I'm racing
secretary
and had organised the trophies, engravings, medals and the production of
the
programme for the event (my printer had been working overtime, as had I).

Whilst at the dinner, in the middle of the main course, a person told me
about
how, if I wanted to stay slim & healthy like him, I should not eat a meal
such
as the one on the plate... the fact is, he had exactly the same on his
plate as
me, which he was eating... a couple of other people, during the evening,
made
comment about how if I want to be healthy, I should be eating A, not
eating B,
doing C, not doing D. Did I ask these people for their advice? No, they
simply
felt it was perfectly acceptable to tell me how so much better they are
than me
with the "If you want to be slim like me..."

Maybe a reply along the lines of "well if we a sharing unasked for advise,
you do realize it is extremely rude to comment on someone's weight don't
you"?

Jo
