Types of hissing

Tiger will hiss for no good reason. When I am going upstairs, he will
try to block my way and if I bump him with my leg he will hiss. When I
walk by him he will reach out and catch my shoe with a claw - he hisses.
It doesn't mean he's angry. It doesn't seem to mean anything at all.
He just likes to hiss.

Sounds to me like he's trying to establish dominance. I went through a
lot of that with Leila when she first came to live with me and
discovered that ignoring her didn't work, but that glaring at her and
moving slowly until *she* gave way, did. That's for the blocking the
way bit. The reaching out to grab a shoelace is probably play, just to
remind you that he is a Fierce Wild Beast.

When Imp was a kitten and would hiss at me for no reason, i would hiss
at him right back. The first time he blinked with a "WTF?" look.
