please help me.
i am really worried about my big beautiful cat, toby. lately he's been
extremely lethargic and distant. all he does is sleep. yes, i know cat personalities, but this is serious. i NEVER see him move around or act interested in ANYTHING anymore, where he used to rub on people and everything. his fur is also very, very rough and shaggy... it also appears to me that he's had a serious drop in weight... and another very unusual thing... he sleeps in the bathtub. he never used to do that and i don't understand what it means. he's also had some bathroom accidents lately and has been vomiting. earlier this year we got a kitten that is just a maniac and i don't know if this might have had something to do with it. the kitten and toby played destructively and manicly for the first few months, and even up until about a month and a half and ago... but now toby's personality has just vanished. all he does is sit and stare. if the kitten comes near him he growls. it's very sad to watch. when we first got him he was a stray that we took in... the lady that found him made sure he had his shots and the vet estimated that he was probably three years old. this was about 2 years ago now. so these symptoms which remind me of my nana's cat who was HORRIBLY old when he finally let go aren't the same unless the vet was wrong about his age. i just don't know what to do and as a single mother i really don't have the means to take him to the vet. but i'm scared. this has been going on for a while now and i don't know what to do. can anyone make a guess as to what this is about? is it psychological? age? is there some well known cat disease that sounds like this? help! - k i t z - can't sleep, the maitre d will bite me... can't sleep, the maitre d will bite me... can't sleep, the maitre d will bite me... http://www.livejournal.com/users/kitznegari |

All of this points to a medical problem, IMO. It's not an age thing - esp. since he's only 5-ish. And if he was playing with the kitten up till several weeks ago, I doubt if it's psychological. The fact that he';s lethargic & apathetic, that the condition of his fur is poor - he may be dehydrated, that he's losing weight, is losing it at both ends of the digestive tract, & is sleeping in the bathtub (my first cat sat in the bathtub when she was ill w/CRF) all say to me that he's ill. I know what you said in your 4th paragraph - below, but none of us can actually diagnose the exact problem & treat him for it; he really, really needs a vet appt. Call, explain the problems he's exhibiting, & see what they say a payment schedule. Cathy earlier this year we got a kitten that is just a maniac and i don't know if this might have had something to do with it. the kitten and toby played destructively and manicly for the first few months, and even up until about a month and a half and ago... but now toby's personality has just vanished. all he does is sit and stare. if the kitten comes near him he growls. it's very sad to watch. when we first got him he was a stray that we took in... the lady that found him made sure he had his shots and the vet estimated that he was probably three years old. this was about 2 years ago now. so these symptoms which remind me of my nana's cat who was HORRIBLY old when he finally let go aren't the same unless the vet was wrong about his age. i just don't know what to do and as a single mother i really don't have the means to take him to the vet. but i'm scared. this has been going on for a while now and i don't know what to do. can anyone make a guess as to what this is about? is it psychological? age? is there some well known cat disease that sounds like this? help! - k i t z - can't sleep, the maitre d will bite me... can't sleep, the maitre d will bite me... can't sleep, the maitre d will bite me... http://www.livejournal.com/users/kitznegari |

It sounds like he's in a lot of discomfort. It could be just about
anything from something simple like too much stomach acid and a bladder infection to something serious like diabetes or thyroid disease or kidney disease. At the very least take him to the vet to be examined, and you can work on finding a vet that will set up a payment plan for bloodwork and anything else he might need done. kitznegari thinks it has wings wrote: i am really worried about my big beautiful cat, toby. lately he's been extremely lethargic and distant. all he does is sleep. yes, i know cat personalities, but this is serious. i NEVER see him move around or act interested in ANYTHING anymore, where he used to rub on people and everything. his fur is also very, very rough and shaggy... it also appears to me that he's had a serious drop in weight... and another very unusual thing... he sleeps in the bathtub. he never used to do that and i don't understand what it means. he's also had some bathroom accidents lately and has been vomiting. earlier this year we got a kitten that is just a maniac and i don't know if this might have had something to do with it. the kitten and toby played destructively and manicly for the first few months, and even up until about a month and a half and ago... but now toby's personality has just vanished. all he does is sit and stare. if the kitten comes near him he growls. it's very sad to watch. when we first got him he was a stray that we took in... the lady that found him made sure he had his shots and the vet estimated that he was probably three years old. this was about 2 years ago now. so these symptoms which remind me of my nana's cat who was HORRIBLY old when he finally let go aren't the same unless the vet was wrong about his age. i just don't know what to do and as a single mother i really don't have the means to take him to the vet. but i'm scared. this has been going on for a while now and i don't know what to do. can anyone make a guess as to what this is about? is it psychological? age? is there some well known cat disease that sounds like this? help! -- jamie ) "There's a seeker born every minute." |

"Nomen Nescio" ] wrote in message ... -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- From: (kitznegari thinks it has wings) Ask yourself "How much do I love this cat". After you come up with the answer that I think you'll come up with: Beg, borrow, or steal the money to pay for a vet visit. Hell, write a rubber check if you have to. The sooner he gets to the vet, the less expensive it will probably be to help this poor little guy. It may just be something simple that can be treated with a few dollars worth of antibiotics but could be fatal if not treated immediately. Please, get him to the vet NOW, and worry about the money later. Beautifully put. I say Toby is part of the family. Toby's mom would find a way to take the children to the doctor if they were sick. If she really loves Toby as she says she does, she will find a way to get him the help he needs. [That said, I really, really wish I had millions to dispense checks in cases like this.] |
