Default Abandoned kitten?

Hello

This morning my son informed me that when he went to the mailbox around 8`ish ,
he heard a kitten crying somewhere outside. A few hours later my husband went
into the garage and heard a kitten crying. We followed the sound and it lead us
to the window box under the garage window......it is very protected and hidden
by evergreens. We found one dirty, but seemingly healthy kitten. The eyes are
almost completely opened, it is active, chubby and warm. I have checked on it
every 15 minutes in hopes that the mother would be there, but she never is. The
kitten alternates between crying and sleeping.
My question is this......how do you know when a kitten has been abandoned and
needs human intervention? I called one animal shelter and they weren`t very
helpful and seemed more concerned in making it clear that they couldn`t help
this kitten. They are predicting rain and temps in the 50`s tonight, so I am
concerned. Thanks for any info.
