Spider Hunt Update
So much for fiddlebacks.
I put sticky traps all over the place; Opened up every hidey hole I could think of. No spiders. No scorpions. Not one stinking cockroach! (Well that much is good news.) Next hypothesis. I'll keep the traps out as long as I don't have a cat. Never know what might turn up. Cheers H. |

I don't know if that would be a good idea, considering it seems as if his last 2 cats were killed by spiders in the house. Better get rid of the spiders first, then get more cats. As much as chemicals suck, at this point I'd probably move out for a few days and get an exterminator in. -- Britta Purring is an automatic safety valve device for dealing with happiness overflow. Like I said, I'll keep the traps out and see what turns up. Cheers H. |

Has another cat died there? If they go outside they may be finding spiders. Chemicals will kill other spiders that prey on the brown recluse. What part of the country do you live in? Brown recluse is rare in some areas and very common in others. There is a remedy for the bites, made and sold here in my little town. It works, too. |

Not saying the remedy doesn't work, and given the damage a bite from one of these monsters anything would be worth trying (in addition to prompt medical care) But how on earth would they test such a thing? We have Black Widows under our house and leave them alone just because they do keep other creepy crawleys at bay. They stay where they are and we leave them alone. Other neighbors have exterminators come out, and once they start they can't stop because they have killed off the predators. Of course our house is also built on top of an old walnut orchard. And the black widows seem to have an affinity for old walnut roots. Only real problem is I would really love to get insulation wrap around the hot water pipes under the house. But can't get anyone who has been under the house to go back. And not fair to send anyone who hasn't been warned. Jo |

Spider Hunt Update
I live 25 miles East of Austin, Texas next to Camp Swift, a 12,000 acre
military reservation; Mostly woods, lots of oak and juniper. Brown Recluse and Black Widow are common, as well as Timber Rattlers and Copperheads (voice of experience). The injuries that led to infection (I'm trying to be general) could have happened outside. I'm relieved the sticky traps have turned up empty. What spider preys on a fiddleback? Cheers H.
