Cat dies in fire after saving family

Staff Report
A cat is being credited with alerting a family of four to an early morning
fire Tuesday that destroyed their stilt home in Oak Hill .

Volusia County Fire Services spokeswoman Pat Kuehn said the three adults and
a baby were asleep inside the residence at 187 Douglas St. when they heard
the cat screeching.

Jeremy Huskey, 29, Nilsa Courthon, 33, and John Courthon, 14 months, were in
one bedroom. Huskey's brother, Jason, 25, was in the other. All escaped
unharmed, however, two cats and a dog perished in the flames.

"Including the cat that alerted them," Kuehn said.

She said firefighters responded to the home at about 5:25 a.m. after a
neighbor spotted the fire on the back porch of the waterfront residence.

"He said the flames were coming through the roof," Kuehn said.

County crews were joined by those from Edgewater and New Smyrna Beach in
extinguishing the blaze.

Kuehn said the occupants were being assisted by the Red Cross.

County and state fire investigators suspect the blaze was sparked by an
electrical problem, she said.
