Default Vet question

Hi, all,

I hope you don't mind a newbie asking questions. My cat has a UTI and
the vet gave me 250 mg Amoxicillin tabs. That sounds like *way* too
much, and I'm afraid to give it to him.

Does anybody know if that's the correct dose?

Chak

Yep, that sounds like way too much. Good thing you questioned that.
Here's a site for dosage, but I would run this past a vet, maybe a
different one than you have now...:

http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache...r+cat s&hl=en

(It says "Cats: The recommended dosage is 50 mg (5-10 mg/lb) once a day.)

It's high, but the penicillins (including amoxicillin) are, in the
absence of allergy, generally nontoxic. I don't think there's a huge
danger.

I'm a little surprised, however, that the vet didn't give liquid
amoxicillin, which is easier to measure, and, in my opinion,
administer. It's strawberries-and-cream flavored, which, for some
reason, was extremely attractive to Clifford (RB).

Now, did Clifford, once he got into the habit of licking his lips after
a dose, simply lap up the next dose? Riiiiight.

I checked again with the vet, who was obviously relieved that I found the
error. We are now on 50 mg/day. Whew.

Thanks very much. He may not have been in any danger from that large a
dose, but it's better he didn't get it, anyway.

There's a LIQUID?????

The last time I gave Pi amoxicillin for a UTI, I started out by putting
it in a glob of peanut butter, which he scarfed down. Then after three
or four days, I got stingy with the pb, and he ended up biting down on
the pill. That was three years ago, and he still won't touch chunky pb.
He laps up the smooth, but he just doesn't trust the crunchy.

A tastier form would have been great.

It's standard human pediatric liquid amoxicillin. Whether other cats
will like strawberries and cream, I can't say. An increasing number of
regular pharmacies (as well as specialist compounding pharmacies) will
flavor liquid prescriptions -- and I doubt the liver and tuna flavors
are meant for little kids.
