OT - Sweeteners

No, saccharin (derived from coal tar) has been around for a long, long time - at least a hundred years! Sodium cyclamate and calcium cyclamate came along in the 1950's, and were hailed as a miracle for sugar-restricted diets. (Until the FDA took them off the market - back when they were genuinely looking out for the public health.) What was the name of the commercial product(s) containing cyclamate? Remember the tiny white saccharin pill that would fizz and then quickly dissolve in liquid? My dad drank about 10 cups of coffee a day - instant coffee, with non-dairy creamer, and one of those tiny saccharin pills. I'm so spoiled now in terms of coffee that this seems like an abomination to me! Joyce -- "Sentimentality" -- that's what we call the sentiment we don't share. -- Graham Greene |
