Default Cat diarrhea - Tylan and/or Biosol

Hello,

I have two sphynx kittens (7 months). The male has chronic loose stool
regardless of what food I have fed him. The female has been fine since
I started feeding them Nutro Natural Care. They both had CBCs and
everything is normal.

I went to an odd sort of vet who prescribed Biosol, which is the brand
name for neomycin sulfate. It is used to treat bacteria from E-coli in
sheep & cattle. He seems to respond very well to the medication, but
the loose stool returns in a few days.

I later spoke to a GI specialist at the Animal Medical Center in NYC,
and she had never heard of prescribing this medication for bacterial
diarrhea in cats, and had suggested Tylan as an alternative.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with either of these
medications and with chronic loose stool in general.

They are being fixed this week, at which point I am going to try to
switch them to an adult "sensitive stomach" formula food.

Thanks,
Kristin

Has your vet talked about the possibility of IBD? As far as I know, that
can only be diagnosed with a biopsy. If your vet thinks that is a
possibility, maybe you could do that while he's under for the neuter.

Our cat had possible IBD or food allergy, and he had some other things
going on and was not in shape for a biopsy. We treated him by feeding
him IVD cat food, which is for cats with food allergies. It does not
have the grain and other common things that cats are allergic too.

The other thing I think of with diarrhea in cats is the feline distemper
virus. I think your cat would be have other symptoms though, and be very
sick.

Good luck,

Rhonda

This is a morbid story, but I recently lost a cat (18 months old), who
had IBD. He died suddenly four days after the highly recommended
surgical biopsy was performed. The results ended up being IBD &
Hepatitis. I think you can understand where I am coming from being
hesitant to perform this surgery again, howeve it's really scaring me
that both male cats (the previous one was also a sphynx) seem to have
similar issues!

I read that the sphynx have a very fast metabolism, which causes food
sensitivity. I am going to try a grain-free diet. Is IVD a
prescription food?

Thanks for your response,
Kristin

IVD is a prescription food, and there are 3-4 different flavors. That
worked well for us because cats will blame their food when they don't
feel well, and develop an aversion to a particular kind. We changed
flavors a few times to get past that.

Sorry about your other cat. Did he die because of the biopsy? I
understand being nervous about doing that again.

Take care,

Rhonda
