My Companion is Dying

My cat of over 14 years has kidney desease and the vet said she only has
about a week or so to live. He said she may or may not be in any pain
and she appears to NOT be in any pain as she walks around Ok and still
has a VERY good appitite. I do not have the heart to put her down but I
do not want her to suffer in any way!

I had to put a dog down about 10 years ago and it tore me up and I could
see how scared my dog was and I told myself I would never take another
animal in to be put to sleep as the look in his eyes still haunts me to
this day.

I asked the vet if he could give me some pills that I could give to her
so she would just go to sleep and never wake again, a very peacefull way
to exit this world. He said NO!......I'm sure it's because they are
money hungry and want your last dollar after the animals life is no
longer a ticket for him to get money from me.

I want Snooper to die peacefull here at home where she is familure with
the smells and surroundings. The only vet I can find who will come to my
house to do it wants $200.00 to do it and I can not afford that amount
as I just spent $190 on blood tests and meds and I am a disabled person
on a limited income.

If anybody has knowledge of anything I can orally give Snooper to put
her to sleep in a easy peacefully and Painless way Please let me know.

There are no fool proof ways of euthanizing a pet at home. You can cause her
more pain and suffering. Bring her to the vet's and stay with her. It will
be peaceful and a kindness to your pet.

It doesn't sound like your cat is even ready to be put to sleep. 14
isn't old. Why don't you get a second opinion? If she is acting ok,
maybe she is, and maybe this is an incorrect diagnosis. Most vets that
I have dealt with will euthanize a cat thay they have seen before at no
cost.

If you euthanize an animal that isn't ready to go, and the vet doesn't
know what he is doing, you may have a really bad scenerio.

Our vet gave us a shot to keep at home for when we decided to bring in
our rabbit. It was a sedative or muscle relaxer -- I'm not sure which,
but it was enough to relax him for that last ride. I would not try to
euthanize at home, you don't want anything to go wrong. It's tough enough.

It's hard to decide on the right time, but we decided not to do it if
they seemed like they were not in pain and were still eating, as yours
does. Don't do it before you are both ready.

No, that's not the reason. Drugs that are strong enough to kill pets
quickly and painlessly are strong enough to kill people, too. Think
controlled substances, DEA, etc. These are the sort of things the vet
keeps in a safe in their office so that they don't fall into the wrong
hands.

Well, there really isn't anything that's going to do it that tidily. I
think you're going to have to resign yourself to saying goodbye to your
cat at the vet's office. :-(

Most of my cats were euthanized at a hospital but my Moonshines dies
peacefully at home. She just wanted to sleep all the time and I just let
her drift away. I do remember the fear in the eyes of some of my cats at t
he vet and only go that way because I think the cat may suffer for too long.

Get another opinion because if your cat is walking around and eating I don't
know why you would want to end her life.

We had a cat that was diagnosed similarly - she'd lost a lot of weight. 2
years later we took her in again because she lost a lot of weight again
(she'd gained it back in between) and was asked if it was the same cat!
This time she was diabetic, so we gave her insulin shots and she lived
another 2 years. She has since died quietly at home.

Another cat was failing, and the vet gave him a muscle relaxant, and he
slowly went to sleep at home, and died in his sleep.

Before these 2, I put a cat to sleep on the vet's advice, and don't think I
can do it again.

So, get another opinion, keep your cat as long as she doesn't appear to be
suffering, try special food for kidney problems (Science Diet k/d) before
thinking of putting yourself through euthanizing your cat. Let her die at
home if you can....

I recently lost my 14-year-old cat Sara to renal failure. By the sounds of
it, your cat is doing all right for the time being. As long as she is eating
and walking around, she has some quality of life left.

Again, by what you describe, she is not ready to die.
