Update on RED's chin lump

thank you all for you thoughts, advice, and kind wishes in response to
my post about RED's chin lump.

The vet thought that the lump could be chin acne, a cyst, or an
abscessed tooth draining. He put her on a dose of amoxicillin for a
week.

RED responded well! I could feel the lump get smaller, then seem to
break into smaller lumps and scab and dry up.

A few days after we finished the amoxicillin the lump reappeared, this
time in a different place on her chin.

I called the vet and I was given 2 options: either come in a see the
relief vet (regular vet is there today but can't see us, and is out of
town next week), OR continue amoxicillin for a longer span. I went
with continuing the antibiotic, since it seemed to work before and
only reappeared once we stopped.

I hope this will work, RED doesn't seem to be bothered by the lump,
but I'm awfully curious what this could be, and how to prevent it in
the future.

(RED is an indoor cat. Female, spayed. About 2 1/2 years old, a
rescue cat we adopted when she was 1. We have a second rescue cat,
Mary Todd, who has been with us since April and is 1 year old.
Sometimes they get in fights--usually in the evening, but generally
get along just fine.)

So you use plastic food or water dishes? I understand they can cause
problems with acne and such. I feed and water my cats in flazed ceramic
saucers and bowls.

No. actually they drink out of glass cups (yes cups, after I found
they preferred the glass of water on my bedside table to their own
bowls, I switched), and eat out of metal dishes or ceramic plates.

Wait, RED does sleep in a little cat bed that has leather/pleather/
plastic trim, maybe that could be doing it. I'll double check the
material, and maybe cover it. We'll see if that makes a difference.

If you feed wet food you might try washing the cats face after eating. Even
though cats groom themselfs they can't always get under the chin very well.
My old cat had acne and I found just washing his face off got rid of the
problem

I have a cat who gets lumps from kitty acne just about every year,
despite all my attempts to prevent it. Here's what I do to minimize
it:

1. Use only ceramic or glass bowls and wash daily. Both plastic and
metal made the acne worse.
2. Check her chin regularly. If you see black "dirt", wash gently with
warm water and baby wash/soap.
3. Ask your vet about Pyoben, a benzyol (sp) peroxide gel to put on
the chin. (Note: this gel works great but use sparingly. It dries out
the skin and she will temporarily lose the hair on her chin. I use no
more than once per day, then taper to every other day.)
4. If RED does get another lump in the future, watch her carefully. As
you've learned, these things can develop into infections quickly.

I can't believe how fast the lump swelled up again. It's getting
smaller and drying up again with the antibiotic.

Before the lump, I'd been slowly switching her to wet food--it's about
50-50 at the moment-- I'll make sure to wash her little chin after
eating!
And I'll wash the bowls and plates everyday and change the metal bowl
to a ceramic one.

I just love it when things go right & we can help someone help
understand their cat's needs as well as their own. It shows merit in
merely asking, because it is clear that someone cares enough to ask
their question in the first place.

(Especially when it is not asking us to diagnose a non specific
problem that only a vet can diagnose?!!)
