how to give a pill
I need to give my cat Pepcid twice a day. I've been fairly successful
but I wondered if there was an easier way. Right now I hold him in my arms, face up and put it on the back of his tongue. Sometimes he spits it out but usually he swallows it. the problem is, he is pretty big and picking him up isn't easy for me. I'd like to do it while he's standing if at all possible. If not, then I'll keep doing what I'm doing. I don't want to mix it with food or a treat since it's supposed to be given before food. He is very gentle and will let me do whatever so there's no concern about him hurting me. I'd just like to make it as easy on him as possible but do it so he doesn't spit it out. thanks |

Here's what I do: I use a small wooden (or plastic) coffee stir stick. I drag the tip through some refrigerated soft margarine, until there is a good sized ball of it on the end. I press the Tapezole (tiny 1/2 pill) into the margarine. Then I turn the stick so the margarine is facing down. I open my cat's mouth, and 'wipe' the margarine as far back on her tongue as I can. I hold her mouth shut, just in case. About 98% of the time, she swallows the margarine/pill, and never tastes the Tapezole, which is very, very bitter tasting. I often, but not always, give her a treat. (She won't eat 'regular' cat treats, long story...) If I see her working her mouth, then I'm sure she's got Tapezole on her tongue, and I give her a treat, to help with the bitter taste. My cat is VERY good about letting me do this 2x a day; I VERY grateful for that fact! I had heard that cats can be given Pepcid; what dosage to you give, and how much does your cat weigh? They're soft and squishy, and it's easy to hide a nasty tasting pill inside. I often only use half of the pocket and pill the cat - cats don't eat the pill pockets like the manufacturers want you do believe - but it's easier for me to use these than a pill popper or just pilling the cat with nothing to disguise it. I had a cat with lymphoma who was on several pills daily, and I relied on those pill pockets the two years he lived after diagnosis. Oh yeah - he was on Pepcid too. Great little pill, that Pepcid - it helped him lots. |

I am not sure how much my experience will help you, because I do mix a little bit of a treat with his pill - but only a very little. Here is what works for me: I take some very soft fresh bread, squish it with my fingers and wrap it around the pill to disguise the nasty taste. Then I smear a bit of pate or something else tasty that he likes to eat on the outside of the bread-encased pill. I pick him up and put him on the dishwasher in the kitchen, so that when I'm standing he's just at the right height for me to wrap my left arm around him, so that he 's pressed to my left side and with his back under my arm/armpit. This way he can't wriggle away while I use my left hand to open his mouth. Then I quickly pop the pill as far down his throat as I can, close his mouth and rub his throat until he swallows. Then I give him a tiny bit more of the pate or some ham or some other treat, for being a good boy. If I do the pill popping quickly enough, he doesn't seem to mind it at all. He has even began to jump up onto the dishwasher on his own, as soon as he smells the pate I am smearing on the pill, and he tries to eat the bread-covered pill on his own. I don't let him do that, though, because he'll chew open the bread covering and spit out the pill. This is a huge improvement over the last time I had to give him pills, which was very stressful for him. I kept chasing him all over the house and trying to hold him down, and he kept fighting me. I think what is doing the trick this time is first, that he can't taste the bitterness of the pill because of the bread that's covering it, so he only expects good things when I bring the pill near his mouth, and second, that I pop the pill into his mouth very very quickly, usually on the first try. It's similar to when I clip his claws - he doesn't like it, but he will put up with me doing things to him for a short time. He's a pretty patient little monster. I hope this helps. Yvonne, Can you pill him when he's on a counter or other raised area? I find that pilling when the cat is a little higher up is a big help. Sit his butt down, open his mouth, and stick the pill in with your finger as far as you can, so he can't spit it out. (Gee, writing this down sounds a bit stern, but it really isn't!) I'd suggest following with a small sryinge of water, if possible, so there isn't any chance of it eroding in his esophagus. |
