Talkin' About Thud
Thud is the dark calico that I adopted last August. She had been passed
around several shelters because she was so terrified of people, and was finally scheduled to be put down as unadoptable. By a rather complicated chain of circumstances, she found her way to my home. You may recall that she spent the first couple of weeks huddled under furniture, absolutely terrified. Then she mauled me so badly that my arm swelled up like Popeye, necessitating a trip to the urgent care center. But that's the only time she was aggressive. She's gradually improved, and while I can't yet pick her up, the situation has gotten a lot more tolerable. She gets along well with the others, especially my monster tabby Giovanni; he isn't sure about having a trophy wife. Sometimes they'll groom each other, happy as can be, and other times he growls if she gets near, and snaps at her on occasion. I'm worried that he could rip her to shreds if he wanted - he's twice her size. But she often follows him wherever he goes. She'll accept affection, usually a foot or so away from me, and usually only if one of the others is nearby for some reason. Thud has a loud, gurgling purr, and it's easy to hear when she's happy. I've finally started letting her outside the last couple of weeks, with supervision, and she is now always eager to escape the house. Fortunately, she's shown no tendency to climb up a bush and get up and over the wall around my property. Getting her back in is always an issue, as I can't pick her up, but so far it hasn't been an extremely time-consuming task after I'm tired of sitting outside watching her. Here's a picture from several days ago of Thud in one of my gardens: http://www.ocrebels.com/images/ThudO...eStoneWall.jpg Art |
