The Thundering Heards
 

Last night I was awakend at about 1 am to a new sound.
....rumble...eumble...rumble...The little ones were running up and down
the hall from the front of the apartment to the back at full pelt. It
was comical at first but after almost a full hour of it it started to
wane a bit.

Then they curled up between for a few minutes to get their requisite
head pats and ran off to go and sleep in the big chair in the living
room.

On the whole I am very grateful the chose Karen and I

The midnight crazies! Betty gets that to a certain extent at night,
but only for a lap or two, not for an hour! I'll bet she really had
the crazies when she was a kitten though.

One of the other things that fascinates me about cats is the way they
can alter their mass so dramatically. Most of the time when Samuel jumps
up on the bed he lands with the impact of a large feather. Other times
he lands like a bowling ball.

Oscar is very good. She only makes a lot of noise in the middle of the night
when

1) I haven't been sleeping well
2) I have an important early-morning meeting
3) Both of the above

Alas they get the midnight crazies, the 3am crazies, the 5am crazies
and so on... but we love them anyway :) They seem to prefer to sleep
all afternoon and evening, so they can party on down once we go to
bed. Today for example, Silver went from sleeping on the computer
desk, to sleeping on the bed, to sleeping on my lap, to sleeping on
the window sill, to sleeping on my lap again, and now she's back on
the bed still snoring! Scout was less adventurous and she's been lying
on the windowsill for about four hours enjoying the afternoon sun...

But we still love them - and it's wonderful when they decide to sleep
curled up in my arms or next to me - just not so great when they jump
up there in the middle of the night with claws extended for balance!

(btw, I only heard the first ten minutes of stampede... I still
thought it was cute when I went back to sleep :P )

Oh, I know that sensation quite well. When I was a teenager, we had
a young cat who, upon being let into the house in the morning, would
come dashing up the stairs to my bedroom and wake me up, knowing that
he would get a few minutes of petting. He developed the habit of
leaping into the air and landing on the bed with all four legs stiff,
so that he would get a "trampoline bounce".

One morning, I happened to be sleeping near that edge of the bed,
lying on my back, so I was awakened by having the cat land on my
stomach, knocking all of the wind out of me.

Cinders, my current cat, sometimes sleeps on top of me. One night I
had to make her move because she started kneading my left kidney.
The process no doubt was very soothing to her, but it wasn't very
pleasant to me.
