Catching up
 

I would recommend that any high school student who is serious about
getting an education drop out as soon as legally permissible, take the
GED, and go straight into college. I dropped out in tenth grade and
joined the Navy when I was seventeen. When I got out, still age
seventeen, I took the GED and went to college. Know what? I didn't start
getting new material until I was a junior. The first two years I did in
one, and I tested out of over half my courses because it was the same
stuff I'd had back in junior high.

Perhaps I should explain why I was in the military such a short time.
Originally I went in to get into UDT (Underwater Demolitions Team),
today known as the SEALS, which had a height limit of 6'1". I was 6'1"
when I went in, and within three months I had grown to 6'4". When they
told me I was disqualified for UDT, I opted out.

Reading this makes me feel less weird. I get the impression sometimes that
I'm
the only one who doesn't wax nostalgic for ttheir teens or 20's. I never
have.
Those years were too hard, for a number of reasons. DH & I were babies
ourselves when we got married and were poor as church mice. Give me
emotional
stability, security that a 30-year marriage brings, wisdom that comes only
with
age, and financial security (well sorta) over a 21-year-old body any day.
But wouldn't it be nice if we could have it all?

I was with a complete dropkick between 15 and 27, which is why I wouldn't go
back to that period. But it doesn't stop me from buying every single CD I
can get my hands on from that period. My collection of cheesy 80's CDs is
getting scarey. My excuse is that I would have bought these when they were
actually popular (and on vinyl) if I'd had the money back then, but since I
have the money now, I'm just making up for lost time. I think my most modern
music dates back to 1991 :-)

Finally got to see Soft Cell live a couple of years back - WOW. Gig of
the year, as far as I was concerned.

And INXS? Definitely not plinky-plonky synthpop. And "Kick" era
Michael Hutchence fell into his own category ..... sorry, I need to go
for a little lie-down here!

Ooooooooooh, Air Supply!!!! I lovelovelove them! I got to see them in
concert back in 1984 and again in 1998. They are incredible!

I have Send Me an Angel on a compilation - Richard Blade's Flashback
Favorites, Volume 5. And it's not the 1989 version, but is the original
from '83 or '84. (Can't help with the other song, though - sorry!)

You might try a Google search for the Flashback Favorites series. I've
seen them around in different stores around here, so they're not obscure,
at least not in the USA.

Makes two of us Yowie - you have just vocalised exactly how I feel. My
late teenage years and the early part of my 20's were quite possibly the
most miserable of my life.

As you say, I would like the 21 year old body however!
