Worried about Roxy
 

Note: I am going to take Roxy to the vet, so I am not asking anyone
for a diagnosis here. I'm just wondering if this sounds familiar to
anyone, or if anyone has opinions or ideas of what might be going on.

I went out of town for a few days and I had a friend come in to feed
the guys once a day. In addition, I left a large bowl of grain-free
kibble out so they wouldn't get hungry between visits. I'd asked my
friend to refill the bowl if it seemed low, and also to refill the water
bowl.

I got home on Monday, and immediately noticed that Roxy seemed
subdued, especially since she hadn't seen me in several days. I
expected a more enthusiastic greeting - she's usually happy to
see me at the end of each workday, and even more so when I come
home from a trip.

Then I noticed that none of the food from the most recent feeding
had been eaten. It seemed like they'd eaten dry food, but it was
hard to tell because I haven't had a chance to talk to my friend
to find out whether she'd had to refill the kibble bowl at any time.

Anyway, I dumped out the canned food that was sitting on the plate,
and opened a new can. Roxy hardly ate any. It's been hard to get her
interested in eating even Fancy Feast (!), although she's thrilled to
have treats (crunchy kitty treats from Evo) and she snarfed down some
cooked chicken (intended for humans - muscle meat only). She also
uses the litterbox, and she doesn't look any thinner, although I was
only gone a few days, so it might be too soon to tell. I've been able
to get her to play a little, but her energy level is definitely lower
than usual.

As a comparison, I'm noticing that Licky isn't interested in any of
the canned food I've fed them, either. By the way, I feed them three
different brands of food, a few different flavors of each, so it's
unlikely to be a problem with the food. Otherwise, Licky seems normal.

Other facts:

- It is not overly hot right now, so I don't think decreased appetite
is due to the weather.

- Roxy isn't drinking a large amount of water or peeing more than
usual.

- She just had two blood tests recently (about 2 months ago), and
they both showed slightly elevated kidney values, but nothing that
indicated a need for treatment. The vet said that she had the very
early stages of kidney disease, and that we should keep an eye on it,
but for now, not do anything else. Could it take a sudden dive like
this?

- Roxy is 15 years old and Licky's 10.

My guess is that your friend gave them some unauthorized goodies they like
better than their regular food. However, I think you're wise to have the
vet check her out.

Every once in a while, when I'd return from a vacation, my cats would
snub me for a day or two. Could they simply be sulking?

They never have before, and I used to go away for a week or two to visit
my family. I've never gotten anything but a joyful reception whenever I've
returned from being out - whether it was from work or a long trip. This
includes Roxy, Licky and Smudge, too.

Roxy is still affectionate, she's just doing everything with less
enthusiasm. :(

Many purrs for Roxy to start eating regularly again. Hopefully she's
just a bit miffed about you being gone for a few days. (Ditto with Licky.)

I was thinking the same as Joy. If they've been having a load of treats
(your friend would be only being nice to them to to cheer them up while
you were away) they might be hoping for the same from you. It might also
account for the energy loss as they aren't eating proper food. I get more
tired when I eat a load of junk food instead of proper meals.

It could be that they have a virus of some kind.

You're doing the right thing getting her checked out.

I don't think my friend would have given them treats. I asked her a bunch
of questions yesterday to see if she had done anything unusual, but she
pretty much did only what I asked her to do. I can ask her again specifically
about treats.

The virus theory makes some sense, since both cats are affected. But the
vet took Roxy's temp this morning and she didn't have a fever. I guess she
could still have a virus. The blood panel she's doing isn't checking for
extra white blood cells, maybe I should call back and ask her to do that,
too.

As far as I know, my friend is the only person who came over. She doesn't
have cats, but she does have a dog. I don't know if he's sick, though. And
I don't know what viruses affect both dogs and cats. More questions to ask!
