Catnip styles
 

For the last couple of months Amelia has feeling very put-upon by the
large number of kittens in the house (she seems to think that two kittens
is two kittens too many). She's generally been expressing her displeasure
with occasional bitchy-cat hisses at Sammy and Tabitha, but this morning
she decided she needed a little more attention than usual and that she
REALLY wanted some catnip. Within a minute of opening the container of
catnip I was surrounded - all 4 kitties decided that catnip sounded like a
good idea.

I was fascinated by their different styles of enjoying it. Sammy kitten
sniffed it and rolled around in it. He tried a taste or two, decided he
didn't care for the taste, and resumed rolling his head in it.

Tabitha kitten sniffed it, started drooling, then rolled in it so
energetically that she looked a black catnip toy. Within a minute of her
starting to roll, the paper towel her catnip serving was on with drenched
with kitty drool.

Cleopatra was more reserved - she sniffed it, rolled her neck fur in it a
little bit, then snarfed it all down. She seems to love the taste more
than anything else.

Amelia sniffed it deeply, rolled her head and neck in it a little, sniffed
some more, ate some, then alternated between sniffing and eating. She
seemed to enjoy the smell and the taste equally.

How about your kitties? How do they like to partake of catnip, if they
care for it at all?

I didn't realize some cats actually ATE it! I've never had one that did
more than roll around in it with a goofy expression on his/her face.
(And actually, catnip-filled toys seem to make a much bigger hit with
all of mine, so far.)

All our cats gobble it up, roll in it, on it, etc. We grow it in the yard,
and usually they don't bother it our there. Only when we pinch off a bit an
crush it. Then they get really excited.

Dried catnip has the scent but doesn't seem as edible. Especially as they
include some pretty woody bits of stem, etc.

They prefer fresh leaves, but many of them will eat catnip. I once
tested a particular fan of fresh catnip: he ate 22 leaves at one
sitting. No sniffing, rolling, or any ofh teh otehr stuff, just
munched then down. Talk about a *stoned* cat ....

The sniffers often like to have their catnip in a paper bag - it
concentrates the vapors (bruise fresh leaves to release the odor).
They combine the usual bag play with sticking their head inside and
snorting the concentrated vapors.

I've never tried catnip from a container for Persia before. She does go
nuts after toys that contain catnip. Running with them, tossing them,
diving at them and rolling them around in her paws.

A woman at work said she could never give her RB kitty catnip... the cat
freaked out, got paranoid and hid under the bed with pupils as dialated
as... well, as dialated as ours were back in the early 70's! ROFL

Emily and Pea just eat it. Max rolls in it until he's completely covered -
and then licks it off his coat.

Our kids all have different reactions and favorite uses for catnip. Maya
likes to eat it, and she gets very vocal about it. Xoxo eats some and
loves to rub himself all over the catnip, then he gets feisty and wants
to wrestle with everybody. Luna is happy just smelling and rubbing
against it a little bit. Issa and Basho both rub themselves very
throughly against the catnip-covered surface (I tend to put it on
several horizontal scratching posts) and do a lot of scratching. Fez
doesn't seem to care much for catnip yet, but his brother *loves* it and
can't get enough. He eats it, licks it, smells it, rubs on it... then
just sits there looking at you with very stoned eyes... :)

Around here you have to give fair warning if you feed the cats nip. They
tend to bite and scratch when they are buzzed.

All of my cats love to eat it, but Roxy loves it most of all. Smudge's
personality doesn't seem to change much after she eats it - I guess she's
a "functional user". :) Roxy turns into a maniac, starts racing around
the house and being very playful. I haven't yet figured out what Licky
Boy does - he's crazy even when not eating catnip, so it's hard to tell
the difference. :)
