Sophie's insulin shots
 

Sophie is our dear chubby little black cat who has diabetes. Every morning
and evening I give her an insulin injection. I pick her up and put her on a
kitchen chair. Then I brush her, which she loves. Next comes the shot, which
she doesn't mind at all, probably because I inject it in her fleshy shoulder
and she doesn't feel it. Then I clean her eyes because they're sometimes
runny. It sounds like a lot of work, but she's worth it!

We treat our cats as members of our family and I can just picture the
look of love in her eyes when you finished. Give her a hug from me.

Sophie sounds like a lovely girl. :)

My neighbor has a chubby black cat, Schwartzie, who is also diabetic. I
used to catsit for her until the diabetes required shots twice daily.
Schwartzie is a bit shy. Sometimes I couldn't even find him when I went
over to replenish food, water and scoop the litter box. (He's an
oddball; doesn't come running when he hears the kibble hit the bowl or
the can of Fancy Feast being opened.) She tried to convince me how easy
it is to give him his injections. Not if I can't find him! I told her
I would feel *horrible* if something happened to him because I couldn't
give him his shots. I suggested she board him at the vet. That idea
didn't go over well so I guess she found someone who was willing to take
the chance. Wasn't gonna be me, sorry.

This is great news about Sophie. You are giving her special care.

What food does she receive? I know a vet tech who is a diabetes specialist.
She has had exceptional results by having her patients eat exclusively
grain-free canned food (usually Wellness). Most of them have had such good
results that they no longer test as diabetic and do not need insulin.

Our vet has prescribed Hill's RD Prescription Diet dry and wet food for
Sophie. It's specially formulated for overweight cats.

Sophie. It's specially formulated for overweight cats.

Bob, you may want to ask the vet about Hill's m/d. It's designed for
weight *and* glucose management for diabetic cats. It's what my
neighbor feeds her chubby diabetic cat. :)

In case you didn't know, you can occasionally print coupons for the r/x
food from the Hill's web site. Or call and ask them and they'll snail
mail you one or two. They'll only do it once every few months, but
every little bit helps. (Persia eats Hill's k/d for kidney problems.)

Of course she is, but there are those who wouldn't take the trouble, so
bless you for doing it.

I did ask our vet about MD on your suggestion. He said that Sophie is
responding so well to insulin injections for diabetes that the RD for weight
reduction is better for her.
