Fat Cat on Hunger Strike After Owner Goes Away

Berlin, Fourth Reich (Bild) - An obese cat six times the normal weight has
gone on a hunger strike at an animal shelter after being taken from his
owner who fed him four lbs of minced meat daily.
Mikesch, weighing nearly 41 lbs, was brought to the shelter April 1 so
overweight he could not take more than four steps without becoming
exhausted. His elderly owner was at the same time taken to a nursing home.
Shelter officials said 6-yo Mikesch is so fat he cannot clean himself and
suffers from heart trouble. They said he felt lost without his owner and
stopped eating altogether when he was put on a diet to gradually lose
weight.
A shelter worker will take Mikesch home with her for 10 days to help get his
appetite back, shelter head Ruff said. "The cat had a good night in her flat
on the first night and that's giving us hope his condition will improve."
Ordinary cats usually weigh between six and 12 lbs and eat no more than
about 10 ounces of food each day, vets say.

Thanks for posting that update. I think we all ought to all target our
collective purr power for this poor kitty. It's just so sad. I don't want to be
negative, but I sure don't feel good about his chances to regain his health and
lose all that weight. He's grieving for his owner and old home on top of his
health problems.

You're very perceptive. I wish this kitty could get quickly into a
loving home environment-- that would surely help his recovery.

Single-mindedness is all very well in cows or baboons; in an animal
claiming to belong to the same species as Shakespeare it is simply disgraceful.

Right you are. We're sending out all we can muster for the poor
guy. Hoping against hope he can be helped as soon as possible.

Tears filled my eyes for that poor bewildered German cat, in his mind he's
lost everything.
Purrs that someone's love and care will coax him back to mental and physical
health to live a long cat-life. Only good thing about all this is that his
notariety may insure his quickly obtaining a good forever home, if his
health holds up.
