cost
as I know medical care is not free in the USA.



They did all of the aforementioned lab work, scans and treatment. They
were finally able to give me some pain medication after they got the IV
inserted.
When they finally released me I went to check out, fully expecting to have
to pay a rather large bill. The woman clicked on her computer and said,
"You're all set. Hope you feel better!" I was gobsmacked! I wasn't
about to look that gift horse in the mouth.

I did have to stop at a pharmacy on the way home to pick up and pay for
the prescriptions. The hospital pharmacy doesn't dispense them to
patients upon being discharged. Prescription drugs are not cheap. All
things considered, I got off lightly.

I'm delighted.. But are you sure they didn't make a mistake? If you are
expecting a large bill, probably you will have one later, unless there is a
reason why you are suddenly exempt and if you know you are not exempt from
health charges, don't leave it for them to pursue you in the future plus
some sort of interest.
FGS, it's not a gift from God. Find out whether you have to pay or not. If
you square it with them and they say "no, you don't have to pay for your
scans etc" that's great. Get it in writing. But from what I know of the
USA health system (which is not a lot) I doubt they will let you off with
this i.e. not paying so be prepared.
If you know you should have paid, I'm not saying that, but if that is so,
you *know* it's a mistake and they will catch you up about it. I leave it
to you to decide. It's never a good idea to suddenly accept free healthcare
when you know you didn't ever have it before.

There are hospitals in this country that have to accept and treat
patients regardless of job status or insurance. When I was hospitalized
for a week for the same thing in 2008 I did have to pay, but at a
reduced rate. The treatment was far more intensive (they had to insert
a drain in my back due to the massive infection). There were surgical
consults and specialists involved. It was not the same as this visit.

Tweed's get all atwitter about nothing. It was not a mistake. I
certainly wouldn't have attempted to take advantage of the situation.

They knew I didn't have insurance. So they wrote it off. It didn't
cost them what it did when I was there for a week (oops, not supposed to
mention the past!).

I don't appreciate being talked down to as if I'm a child. Am I sure I
won't be charged for this? Yeah, I'm sure. I got a courtesy call from
the hospital today just to check on how I was feeling. They didn't call
to say "Hey, you owe us money!"

Tweed really needs to take a chill pill. I think she has a very
negative view of the US and I don't know why.

I was not *afraid* to go when I broke my nose. I didn't WANT to go
because I knew there wasn't a damn thing they could do about it. They
gave me an ice pack (big whup, I have one at home) and Tylenol.

I tripped over the cat steps and fell face first into the night stand.
I knocked over the glass lamp I was trying to reach to turn on, having
stupidly neglected to turn it on in the morning. (It's controlled by a
switch by the door.)

My glasses flew off. I was blind, I was crying in pain and it was dark
in the room. I crawled over to the emergency panel by the door and hit
the alarm. Security showed up and so did my neighbors AND the
paramedics. I kept saying no but they all ganged up on me and insisted
I go to the ER.

The ambulance bill was $400. I was NOT charged for the ER visit.
